Spring arrives this month with the new programme of events of the European Capital of Culture, with classical music, opera from the Metropolitan Opera of New York, dialogue with the Volunteers of Pafos2017, with another “Living History” project with an exhibition and a documentary screening, poetic recitations and theatrical performances from Cyprus and abroad.

The virtuosi of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Wolfgang Schroeder (violin), Sorin Alexandru Horlea (viola), and Peter Gospodinov (cello) present one of the most monumental works of Bach: the variations Goldberg BWV 988, a series of 30 variants of diversity in style, form and feeling.

THE LADY OF THE LAKE MET: Live in HD
Window to the world of opera through a direct link with Pafos and the New York Metropolitan Opera. The Lady of the Lake, a co-production with the MET and Santa Fe Opera. The work by Gioachino Rossini is considered one of the masterpieces of “Bel canto”, with Joyce Di Donato in the role of the Lady of the Lake, Elena. Michele Mariotti conducts the performance - by debut director Paul Curran.

DIALOGUE WITH VOLUNTEERS - PAFOS2017
Highlighting and enhancing the role of volunteers for the success of the European Capital of Culture, Pafos2017 is organising a presentation by Neil Peterson, Director of the successful volunteer programme of the European Capital of Culture Liverpool 2008. The Cyprus Commissioner for Volunteerism and NGO’s Mr Yiannakis Yiannaki will address the event.

Art Exhibition
Within the concept of the programme “Living History”, Pafos2017 in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel illuminates a lesser-known aspect of the persecuted Jewish refugees and prisoners during and after World War II through an exhibition curated by Ms Sigal Harari, which presents artworks by Jewish detainees and refugees during their internment in the British detention camps of Cyprus (1946-1949).

Within the framework of the exhibition “Unknown History” the film "Kisses to Children" will be screened in the presence of its director Vasilis Loulé. This award-winning documentary film is about five young Jewish children in German occupied Greece. This is not a story about the Holocaust, but a story about childhood in the shadow of the Holocaust.

The event will be addressed by H.E. the Ambassador of Israel Mr Michael Harari.

A CELEBRATION AT AL NOURI
The work of Volker Ludwig is a subversive comedy about racism and cultural reconciliation aimed at all ages from 6 years onwards. The play was written and performed in the early 70s by the Berlin Grips Theatre - creators of the innovative childrens’ project "Mormolis". This performance has been adapted to the Cyprus reality with the Cypriot and Syrian trying to jointly deal with their manager.

Joining musical roads and bridging musical genres and eras, Pafos2017 presents the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and members of the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra. They will present the work "Farewell", by Cypriot composer Savvas Savva, the work of contemporary Armenian composer Alexander Arutunian “Concerto for trumpet in A flat major” and Brahms' “2nd Symphony in D major, work 73”.

MISSING
One of the objectives of the European Capital of Culture is to form the foundation and the opportunity to bridge the two communities in Cyprus. Pafos2017 in collaboration with Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute is organising a theatrical performance of the play “Missing” by Turkish Cypriot writer and director Aliye Ummanel, that deals with grief and the trauma of loss, with sensitivity and hope for peace and coexistence in a common homeland.
