Elli Lestas was born in London and now lives and works in Paphos, Cyprus.
She has a B.A. Degree in Textile Design from Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and an M.A. in Fine Art from the University of London Goldsmiths' College.
She was a textile tutor at the London College of Fashion for 6 years and has had many years experience working in the fashion and textile trade.
The art work moves across the disciplines of drawing and making.
The primary themes and threads that run through the work are aspects of the ever changing notions of identity, the self and the ego. Because of a strong fashion and textiles background, fabric and clothing are often used or referenced in the work as they are strong vehicles for expressing identity.
Conceptual clothing and a series of ongoing portraits are the hallmarks of the work. Most of the time the art work defies labelling and is not easily categorized. Often it references or incorporates craft or applied art which suggests that it could have a function. However, it remains functionless except for meaning pertaining to the usual so called function of Contemporary Fine Art.
