Ayurveda is a body of wisdom and system of
health care that developed in more
than 5,000 years
ago. One of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body
health
systems. The word Ayurveda comes from two Sanskrit root words: Ayus, or “life,”
and Veda,
meaning “knowledge” or “science.” Ayurveda is therefore usually translated
as “the science
of life.” Ayurveda offers practical tools, insights, and information for
living in
balance and health, without interference from illness. It is a healing system
that treats the
whole person – the integration of body, mind, and spirit – rather than
simply treating
individual symptoms. It offers a body of wisdom designed to help
people stay
vibrant and healthy while realizing their full human potential
Early Greek
medicine also embraced many concepts originally described in the classical
ayurvedic
medical texts dating back thousands of years.
Providing
guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behavior and the proper
use of our
senses, ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic
integration
between our environment, body, mind, and spirit. The ability to stay flexible
and make the
most healing choices in the midst of constant change.
Profound
practices for balancing the mind and body include yoga, meditation, optimal
nutrition,
sensory healing, breathing techniques, detoxification and cleansing,
massage, a daily
routine that flows in harmony with the seasons of nature and other
mind-body
practices that help us release stress and return to our inherent state of
health and wellbeing.
The two main guiding principles of Ayurveda are :
1) The mind and the
body are inextricably connected, and
2) Nothing
has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind.
Ayurveda teaches
that the key to vibrant health is maintaining our natural state of
balance in our
body, mind, and spirit. When we’re in balance, we feel energized,
centered, and
joyful. On the other hand, when we’re out of balance, life can feel like a
struggle and we
may experience the symptoms of physical and emotional dis-ease.
In our
fast-paced society, it’s easy to get out of balance if we don’t pay attention
to
what we’re
feeling. We can drive ourselves into exhaustion, anxiety, and other health
issues if we
don’t tune in to our inner selves and take time for rest, play, engage in
physical
activity, create loving relationships, and lead a healthy lifestyle.
